Isla Cristina is a small
town with a long fishing tradition which has a
population of nearly 15,000 but this increases
considerably during the holiday season. It enjoys
a Spring-like climate with an average mean annual
temperature of 22° C. The fishing harbour
of Isla Cristina is located at the mouth of the
river Carreras in an area of dunes and marshes
of outstanding beauty.
The fishing harbour is equipped with two expanded
quays with 3 to 6m draughts, and a fish market
providing all services.
The Isla Cristina fleet comprises mainly traditional
inshore fishing boats of over 200, principally
devoted to drift net fishing and, to a lesser
extent, to purse net fishing, which enter
the harbour on a daily basis to auction their
catches at the fish market. Among the most abundant
species can be found prawns, mackerel, sardines,
king prawns and plaice. As regards the deep-sea
fishing fleet this consists basically of freezer
ships that operate on the Canary Saharan banks
with the purse boats putting into harbour every
two weeks and the drift net ones every 40 days. |
