Once an ancient, Etruscan city, then Roman, Volterra is a stunning town set along a ridge that dominates the surrounding hills. It is worth taking time to explore its bustling streets, squares, and medieval buildings and visit the many craft and local produce shops. Not to be missed are the famous alabaster workshops. This precious stone has been worked in Volterra since the 5th century. The famous Etruscan statue ‘Ombra della Sera’, or ‘Shadow of the Night’, is on show here in one of Italy’s major archaeological museums, the Museo Guarnacci.
