Almunecar, Cordoba Province, Andalucia, Spain
- situated on the Costa Tropical is a mdium
sized town with a population of less than 20.000.
It is sheltered by the mountain range so you
have to dive down to it rather than stop off
on route. The town has made every attempt to
preserve its Andalucian character despite being
one of the most important tourist resorts in
Grandada province boasting ruins from the Roman,
Phoenician and Moorish periods.
The beaches are very good with nice rocky coves
and it has a pleasant promenade. There is a
water park on the east side of the coast. A
good selection of shops and restaurants are
loacted in the center. Sites worth visiting
are the excavated Roman aqueduct and baths in
the town centre, the castle of San Miguel (a
steep walk up the hill), the Majuelo Botanical
Gardens and the Roman aqueducts at Rio Seco
valley and Torrecuevas on the outskirts of the
town.
Along the 18 km of local coastline visitors
can choose from a large variety of beaches and
small coves, ranging from fine sand to shingle.
To the west of the town lies the Punta de la
Mona, a pine clad headland. Marina
Del Este is a small picturesque marina situated
between the towns of La Herradura and Almunecar.
A popular holiday / vacation destination, the
area also attracts an increasing number of foreign
residents to the town and the surrounding areas
of La Herradura.
