Coín (pronounced coEEN) has expanded dramatically in recent
years due to a large influx of families from northern
Europe who are looking to locate near to the coast
but wish to live in a traditional Spanish town.
The new La Trocha shopping centre and multi screen
cinema has given a further boost to the town attracting
visitors from around 20 nearby towns and villages.
A Dunnes store and El Corte Ingles food hall are
located at La Trocha.
The out-of town shopping centre and relocation
of the main supermarket to the outskirts of town
has encouraged developers to build new retail
and other commercial units on the edge of town
and the road inot Coin is lined with shops, bars
and restaurants.
A new bypass has opened to divert traffic heading
for Marbella and Cartama away from the town and
easing congestions. Further road improvements
are in progress to improve access from the coast,
past Coín and on towards the Málaga - Campillos
road.
Coín is situated in the fertile valley
of the Rio Grande 20 minutes drive from Marbella
with a history dating back long before the Roman
conquest. The coastal mountains meet the Guadalhorce
Valley between the cork oak and pinewoods of Alpujata
de Coín. According to archaeological finds
made in the Cerro del Aljibe, people have lived
here since the first century B.C.
The nearest town to Coín is Alhaurin el
Grande with similar characteristics and many take
advantage of the shopping and leisure facilities
in both towns. 2 golf courses are located nearby,
Lauro Golf and Alhaurin Golf and Country club.
