A 45-minute drive to the east from Malaga takes
you to this tranquil and beautiful Axarquia
area of Andalucia. The municipality extends
into the northern part of the Axarquia between
the Sierra de Tejeda and the flatter Periana
area, between the spectacular Boquete de Zafarraya
cliffs and the Axarquia mountains. The most
direct road to the area is by the main road
to Velez Malaga.
There area is fascinating for visiting small
traditional Spanish villages. La Vinuela, Alcaucin
and Periana are a collection of small tranquil
villages to the east of the lake make up this
area with most of the older properties mainly
dating back to the 17th and 18th century.
Approximately 12 miles south is the typically
Spanish town of Velez Malaga, with banks, cinemas
and a El
Ingenio, a major shopping centre. A few
miles further and you are in the beach resort
of Torre del Mar with all the usual coastal entertainments and
a well maintained beachfront with bars, restaurants
etc
Excellent road access to Velez Malaga and the
Costa del Sol highway mean you are not cut off
from the amenities and facilities that the coast
has to offer. The Vinuela area makes an ideal
winter and spring holiday destination for walking
and cycling.
Axarquia, the south east portion of Malaga province
is made up of mountains and the Mediterranean
coastline. The mountains are largely protected
national parks - somewhat wild and barren, with
a band of varied agricultural lands on the slopes
down to the sea. It's an old area - prehistoric
man was here, the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans,
Moors all were visitors and it has it's own
deep beauty
