Zahara de los Atunes, Cadiz Province, Andalucia,
Spain - is a small tourist town built around
an old tuna fishing village. There is no harbour;
instead the boats are dragged up onto the beach.
Now most of the boats have moved down the road
to Barbatas.
The ruins of the Castillo de la Almadraba built
in the 15th century by the Duques of Medina
Sidonia can still be seen in the village. The
surrounding area is almost untouched by mass
tourism, and only in the summer months it turns
into one of the most popular beach resorts of
the Andalusian Costa de la Luz.
The longest beach in the area is this massive
stretch of white fine, golden sand and crystal
clear waters, just over 8km in length, and spans
the length from Zahara to el Cabo de Plata.
It is all ideal for windsurfing and diving and
offers a wide range of services. The ocean is
sometimes rough but always beautiful.
Around Zahara de los Atunes are several nature
reserves to be visited, such as the expansive
national park La Brena y Marismas de Barbate,
with its pine forests and salt marshes, where
many endemic species of plants and animals can
be found. Some of the area is ministry of defence
land where access is restricted. The whole area
is known as a bird watchers paradise, since
it lies on the route of migratory birds on their
way to Africa. Great hiking trails along the
coast and horse riding along the beach or in
the forests invite the active tourist to explore
the beauty of this area. Of course windsurfing,
kite surfing, sailing, and all watersports are
possible. The windswept town of Tarifa, only
30 km away, is known as Spain’s most famous
surf spot.
There are several Golf courses nearby, including
the Club de Golf Campo, San Andreas on the A7.The
course has 9 Holes and Driving Range. Idyllically
meandering its way through the exclusive villas
of San Andreas, this is the perfect holiday
/ vacation golf course. Wide fairways, short
rough and manicured greens, lots of bunkers
and the usual Spanish Style water hazards, together
with its considerable length, makes this course
a good challenge for golfers of all standards.
Genial, relaxed staff, totally informal dress
code, inexpensive green fees and buggy hire
make this a must for enthusiasts.
Numerous bars and restaurants, serving typical
regional dishes, line the beach. Each summer
thousands of people from every corner of Spain
and Europe come here to sample the fish, to
enjoy the sunsets and relax in the peace and
quiet of a friendly atmosphere – all of
which constitutes an unforgettable experience.
